What is your routine in the morning? When it comes to eating; it becomes habit, part of who you are and sometimes not as easy to break or if one misstep happens. For example, being pullover by the police while running late and speeding because the alarm didn’t go off due to the thunderstorm that knocked the power out and have no time to make you own breakfast or coffee and now have to stop at the cafe, and they run out of your favorite flavor and have to settle for one that is not so great but need that wake up fix and finally hit some thick traffic as if everyone in the state is going the same way you are! It is a tragedy and throws off the rest of the day.
We have our own daily routine, one that has been the same for as long as I can remember. Sometimes it does get a little thrown off, it happens from time to time like when my turtle tank full of water decided to spring a leak all over the floor – true story. Otherwise we get up at 2:30 during the week, I have a banana and coffee, go to the gym for 4 (yes my husband needs all that time to get ready in the morning), have a big smoothie for recovery, we both get to work and have our favorite raisin bread with a little peanut butter and delicious date jam and this is all by 8am.
So, recently a guy my husband knows saw him eating his breakfast and asks, “What are you eating?” He said oh my wife makes me this awesome peanut butter and date jam on toast. She makes the jam herself.” He was very curious about this and tells him it really looks delicious and he is looking to try something new, something that is healthy and quick. He reply’s to him, “it is so addictively delicious and so much heathier than other jams. I will have my wife do a blog on it.”
Now, for the past 2 weeks, my husband says to me, “when are you going to do a blog about the date jam?” I tell him it is so simple to make that it really doesn’t need a recipe. It takes 5 minutes to make! He responds, “But you should really do a blog anyway, show everyone how delicious it looks and how it is a quick breakfast that can even be make the night before.” This can be made ahead of time in batches that stays good in the frig. I make our toast, PB and Jam the night before, put them in a container and it stays fresh and delicious for the next morning, easy peezy, just grab and go! So that got me thinking, maybe it would be a good blog to write.
Why dates and not simply buy a jar of jelly off the grocery store shelf? Let’s do a quick comparison
Grape Jelly (a couple popular brands)
Ingredients: Concord grapes, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, fruit pectin, citric acid, sodium citrate.
Ingredients: Dates, dates and more dates and a little filtered water
Now I don’t know about you but last time I checked grapes are already sweet and delicious on their own, why would you ever want to add ingredients that are not good for you? Dates are not only natures candy but full of fiber, high in natural sugars, essential minerals – potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, zinc, calcium and iron to name a few. Vitamins – Vitamin A and K, Folate, niacin, riboflavin and thiamin. Here are some other great benefits of eating them https://www.organicfacts.net/health-benefits/fruit/health-benefits-of-dates.html
How do I make this delicious date jam or paste? I use my mini food chopper and a little water! That’s it, really it is that simple! Don’t have one, you can get it here on Amazon. There are other brands that are just as good, the Ninja does the trick to and a bit cheaper.
So the next time that your alarm clock doesn’t go off and you are being chased by the police for speeding then get caught in traffic, just remember that you will have your delicious date jam sandwich sitting next to you. Now all you have to worry about is getting to the coffee shop!
